Everyone can feel the spiritual ablaze in their bodies when sitting beside the holy Ganges or presenting their soul before the great lord Shiva.

The essence of Mahashivratri

As the spring approaches, this spiritual consciousness of this city is at its peak, to celebrate the one and only day of Mahashivratri. Traditionally this festival falls in the Phalguna month of Shukla Paksha according to Hindu calendar. For India this day is a festival, but for Banaras it is much more than just immense emotions. The city is glazed up, and completely immersed in energy from head to toe. It is believed that this festival dates back to one thousand years which holds the legend that this day is the day when Mata Parvati was united to Lord Shiva in the holy constitution of marriage.

The allegiance of the Mahashivratri Mahotsav

On the day of Mahashivratri celebration, devotees recreate the magical wedding scene of Shiva and Parvati from the Shiva Purana. A three-day massive Mahotsav is held in the city with the major attraction being the Shiv Baraat (wedding procession of lord Shiva). This festival is celebrated during the dark fortnight or the night without the moon. People walk for more than five hours in mad devotion and spirituality immersing completely in festive revelry, dances, intense music which results in impassioned ecstatic devotional spirit.

The magnificient Rudrabhishek at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple

Bhaang, Dhatura leaves, Bael leaves, Coconut and other fruits are most importantly offered to the greatest lord Shiva on his wedding day. The Shiva Lingam is profusely poured with milk which gives out the essence of bathing Lord Shiva with milk. The Sadyojata, Vamadeva, Aghora, Tatpurusha, and Poorsuktam recitation is done following the offerings to Lord Shiva. Devotees chant the Panchakshara Mantra- Om Namah Shivay. Prayers are also offered to the son of Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha and Maa Durga, who is believed to be an incarnation of Goddess Parwati.
