The temple wall has designs made of square shaped blocks and decorative hooves.
History
The temple was built by Kashi Naresh Maharaja Balwant Singh, who ruled the Banaras State (Varanasi) between 1738 and 1770; The person who also built the Ramnagar Fort. He was succeeded in 1770 by his son Raja Chait Singh (Chet Singh). The state of Beras was the vassal of the Nawab of Awadh-ud-Daula at that time. After the death of the Nawab of Awadh in 1775, the first Governor-General of British India, Warren Hastings, decided to assume the rule of the Banaras State. He levied unrealized taxes like Rs 2.3 million and additional war tax of Rs 5 lakh on Raja Chait Singh, Which was reluctantly paid by the king. In 1778 the East India Company demanded 2000 cavalry from Raja Chait Singh, which was ignored by Raja. Later the company reduced its demand to 1000 cavalry troops. The King offered the Company 500 cavalry and 500 foot soldiers, which the Company accepted but the King failed to provide such troops. Warren Hastings ordered two soldier companies to arrest the king of Benares. Sepoy companies attacked the capital city of Benares, Ramnagar from its western side. The Durga temple, situated on the border of the western part of the capital Ramnagar, and hence became the first victim of that attack. The British Sepoy Company tried to demolish the temples with cannons. Several rounds were fired at the temple and a large part of the temple was destroyed. A brown patch inscribed by a round canon at the top of the temple clearly bears that Telling the story of the attack. After a fierce battle between the army of Banaras and the British East India Company, the army of Banaras lost the battle. The king briefly escaped from the fort of Ramnagar by a tunnel and was exiled for 30 years.
After this, the kingdom of Benares came to the paramount position of the British Empire and was ruled by the successor of King Chait Singh in the name of the Queen of England. The new rulers of Banaras state wanted to make the damaged part of the temple similar to the original, but no one came forward due to the complex design of the temple. The king announced a huge prize for the construction of the temple. A person came forward and promised the king to make the temple absolutely original and in case of his failure, he would jump over the temple and kill himself. He built the entire temple exactly the same but failed to recreate the top design of the temple. When he felt that he had failed in his promise, he jumped from the top of the temple. His brilliant work can now be compared to the elaborate view of the sculptures, Which are the remaining sculptures of the attack which were made by him. It is also believed that the temple was originally dedicated to Lord Vishnu, but due to some paranormal activities in the temple premises, the Brahmins of the king’s court suggested converting the temple to the deity Durga.
